Guayusa is a holly tree native to the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, where its leaves have been brewed by local communities for generations. Like yerba mate, it naturally contains caffeine, and its dried leaves brew a smooth, mellow cup with a slightly sweet, earthy flavor and very little bitterness. Guayusa pairs nicely with mint, lemongrass, citrus, ginger and fruit in herbal blends, and it blends well with green tea. In Ecuador, families traditionally gather before dawn to share guayusa and tell stories.
